Since making its full-scale entry into the Japanese market in 2016, TP-Link has pursued meticulous localization tailored to Japanese housing conditions and communications standards. As it marks its 10th anniversary, we spoke with the head of its Japanese subsidiary about its future plans, including preparations for the domestic rollout of Wi-Fi 8 products and compliance with cybersecurity assessment schemes.
TP-Link officially entered the Japanese market in 2016. Although its products initially focused on global specifications, the company pursued localization tailored to Japanese housing conditions and communications standards, and has now established itself in the Japanese market. Early models such as Archer C7 differed in some respects from specifications for Japan, and the company introduced slimmer designs and Japan-specific features in response to local demand.
To address Japan's distinctive communications environment, software support advanced in line with the spread of IPv6 IPoE. In 2019, firmware supporting v6プラス was provided for Archer A10/A2600, and in 2022 the vertically mountable Archer AX80 was launched as a model for the Japanese market. Since then, compact models for Japan and IPv6 IPoE support have continued to be standardized.
In October 2024, TP-Link's global headquarters was reorganized in California, and efforts are underway to establish systems aligned with international standards for quality and security. Its Japanese subsidiary has expanded into areas including the Tapo smart-home brand, Omada for businesses and VIGI video surveillance, and has stated a policy of concentrating resources on leading areas.
Looking ahead, preparations are underway for the domestic rollout of Wi-Fi 8-compatible routers, with products such as Archer 8 Ultra expected to be introduced to the Japanese market sequentially. The company is also advancing its response to JC-STAR, an IoT cybersecurity assessment scheme, and plans to improve transparency by coordinating with the UK's mutually recognized PSTI Act and CLS, as well as initiatives by the US CISA.
