The foundations were laid for GNI's growth after Mr. Chris Sauvey founded the company in Japan and advanced the acquisition of Shanghai Genomics and drug discovery and development. This timeline traces the company's early history, including the start of its IND application for F351 in China and its 2008 shift from a Japanese base toward expansion in China.
GNI Group Ltd. (GNI) founder Chris Sauvey established GNI in 2001 with a vision for a Japan-based business. He had studied medicine at Kyushu University and pursued a strategy of combining Japan and China's research and development capabilities while making use of Japan's capital markets. Against this backdrop, GNI grew by leveraging Japan's research and capital-market environment.
In 2005, GNI acquired a 76.74% stake in Shanghai Genomics, strengthening the framework linking drug discovery and development in China with Japanese technology and capital. With Mr. Luo becoming GNI's COO, the company established an operating structure to advance drug discovery and clinical development in China.
In 2007, GNI was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Mothers market, completing its formal listing on the Japanese market. The following year, the Phase 1 trial of the F351 drug candidate began, bringing GNI's drug discovery research and development into the clinical stage.
In 2008, GNI closed its Drug Discovery Analysis Center and integrated it into Shanghai Genomics, accelerating the concentration of its research functions in China. GNI USA was also liquidated, clarifying the strategy of integrating Japanese technology and capital resources with China's on-the-ground development capabilities.
