Toyama-based food supermarket ALBIS is expected to become a consolidated subsidiary of Osaka-based major retailer Life Corporation through a tender offer, while its store operations will be maintained. The integration could expand its product range and promote cost reductions.
ALBIS, headquartered in Imizu, Toyama Prefecture, has announced that it is expected to come under the umbrella of Life Corporation. Life plans to launch a tender offer for ALBIS shares and complete the transaction, making ALBIS a consolidated subsidiary, by 10 November. ALBIS is expected to be delisted, but has explained that its store name and employment will be maintained.
ALBIS currently operates approximately 70 stores, mainly in the Hokuriku region, with nearly half concentrated in Toyama Prefecture. The move comes against a challenging backdrop of population decline and a declining birthrate and aging population, the entry of supermarkets from outside the prefecture, and intensifying competition from discount stores and drugstores. ALBIS has maintained a community-focused operating model for many years.
Life operates approximately 320 stores in the Tokyo metropolitan and Kinki regions. It aims to reduce costs and expand its product range by using its strength in private-label products and incorporating expertise in joint procurement and product development. The possibility of ALBIS handling Life’s private-label products is also under consideration.
President Ikeda (池田) said that ALBIS would maintain its community-rooted approach while accelerating growth through the integration. Efforts to improve shopping convenience for local residents while pursuing further development will be closely watched.
