South Korean semiconductor giant SK hynix was reported to be considering building a memory semiconductor plant in Miyagi Prefecture, and Governor Murai (村井) commented that “it is not something that can be decided easily.”
South Korean semiconductor giant SK hynix is considering plans to build a factory in Miyagi Prefecture, a Korean newspaper reported. The investment is expected to total several trillion yen, with Miyagi reportedly under consideration as a potential site.
In response to the report, Miyagi Governor Murai (村井) said on 26 August, “This concerns national security, and it is not something that can be decided so easily,” suggesting that maneuvering between countries could be involved.
South Korean reports pointed to concerns that the United States is stepping up efforts to seek investment in semiconductor factories domestically. SK hynix, however, told NNN that no decision had yet been made.
Chairman Chey Tae-won (崔泰源) is scheduled to attend a Japan–South Korea symposium on measures to address the declining birthrate in Sendai on 30 August, but there are currently no plans for him to meet with Governor Murai (村井), according to the report.
