At the 6th's open, the Nikkei 225 rose after choppy trading. The market opened slightly higher in the morning session and temporarily fell into negative territory, but resumed its upward trend, supported by high-priced shares including Advantest.
The Nikkei 225 began trading on the 6th at ¥69,954.61, up ¥7.75 from the previous day, and temporarily moved into negative territory before strengthening again and extending its gains. Buying led the market on the back of gains in US equities, although profit-taking selling also weighed at times.
Amid choppy trading, high-priced shares such as Advantest and Recruit Holdings helped lift the index. In overseas markets the previous day, crude oil futures fell, easing concerns about inflation. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose for a third straight session, while the Nasdaq rose for a fourth straight session and set a record closing high.
The yen-denominated settlement value for Nikkei 225 futures was approximately ¥71,130, up ¥40 from the 5th. In the Tokyo foreign-exchange market, the dollar was around the upper ¥157 range and the euro around the upper ¥176 range as of 9:03 a.m.
Through the day's trading, the Nikkei 225 generally remained in an upward phase despite choppy conditions, with high-priced shares supporting the market.
