A former Deloitte executive at ABeam Consulting and Kunio Ito (伊藤邦雄) of Hitotsubashi University jointly announced the establishment of a director development platform to counter activists. The full plan to attract 500 companies within 3 years has been unveiled.
The establishment of the Directors Edge Consortium was announced, accelerating efforts to improve board quality and strengthen board structures at Japanese companies. Against a backdrop of successive director dismissal proposals at general meetings of shareholders, the consortium demonstrated a focus on practical functionality and verification through dialogue.
The announcement was led by Yoshinobu Abe (安部慶喜), formerly of ABeam Consulting, and Kunio Ito (伊藤邦雄), head of Hitotsubashi University’s CFO Education and Research Center. Drawing on his experience as the proponent of the Ito Report, Ito shared his views on the consortium’s direction.
The core of the plan is to build an education and development platform that responds to changes in the capital markets surrounding directors, with the aim of attracting 500 listed companies within 3 years. The platform aims to develop practical talent capable of withstanding pressure from the capital markets.
The current challenges identified included the view that the market for outside directors is driven by form over substance and remains immature, as well as questions regarding the reliability of skills matrices and the validity of assessments conducted through dialogue.
