Apple reportedly prototyped and internally tested a shorter Apple Pencil for a foldable iPhone. However, concerns that it could leave marks on the display, along with challenges involving side-mounted storage and attachment, make a simultaneous launch with the first-generation model unlikely. Official announcements and further reports are awaited. A new-product event titled “Surprise and shine.” is scheduled for 9 September US time.
Apple reportedly prototyped an Apple Pencil shorter than its existing iPad models for a foldable iPhone, considering magnetic attachment to the side of the device for storage and charging. According to Gurman’s newsletter, “Power On,” internal testing is under way.
When unfolded, the foldable iPhone is expected to take the form of a small tablet, making a Pencil a natural companion for handwritten notes, annotations and drawing. However, the device’s width when folded and its short vertical dimension could make side attachment inconvenient, and storage and handling are also expected to pose challenges.
The inner display is delicate, raising concerns that marks could become noticeable when using a fine-tipped stylus. Although a Pencil has reportedly been prototyped and tested, the view is that a formal decision to launch it at the same time has not been made.
Samsung has introduced S Pen products for foldable devices, but constraints in balancing screen protection with a slim design have been noted. Apple’s plans are likewise said to depend on the overall balance of the device’s design. Whether the Pencil will be included with the first-generation model remains unclear at this stage.
The foldable iPhone could be formally announced at the September event, “Surprise and shine.” However, the availability of Pencil support and the specific specifications will need to await an official announcement.
