As part of the second phase of its Railway Update Plan, JR Kyushu announced its plans for the coming period, including the phased renovation of the cabins of the 883 Series “Blue Sonic” trains from spring 2027, track infrastructure improvements at Fukukōdai-mae Station, the opening of the new JR Kaizuka Station, and a review of train operations in the Fukuoka metropolitan area.
As the second phase of the Railway Update Plan announced in June 2026, JR Kyushu disclosed further details on the cabin renovations for the 883 Series “Blue Sonic” trains and its future plans for train operations in the Fukuoka metropolitan area. The renovations are scheduled to begin in phases around spring 2027, with upholstery using different designs for each car to create both a cohesive appearance and individual character.
The interior improvements will include installing power outlets on the wall side of every seat and refurbishing the common areas in the vestibules as more comfortable spaces, with the aim of improving passenger convenience. This is expected to enable passengers to charge smartphones and laptop computers.
Track infrastructure improvements at Fukukōdai-mae Station are scheduled for completion in spring 2027. In addition to enabling turnaround operations for trains from the Hakata direction, operational continuity will be improved by expanding turnaround operations during level-crossing accidents to Fukukōdai-mae Station via Chihaya, Kashii and Kyūsandaimae.
The opening of the new JR Kaizuka Station between Chihaya and Hakozaki has been set for spring 2027. The plan includes introducing new-style ticket gates equipped with facial-recognition capabilities and guidance terminals using AI to handle inquiries at the ticket gates. Consideration is also under way for introducing evenly spaced and pattern-based timetables as part of the update to train operations in the Fukuoka metropolitan area, with details scheduled to be announced around winter 2026.
