Shopify Japan announced the new AI-agent tools “shop.md” and “shop.dev.” shop.md is offered as a personal shopper function for consumers, while shop.dev is offered as an integration platform for developers.
shop.md links AI agents such as ChatGPT and Claude with a Shop account to provide personalized searches and recommendations from more than 1 billion products across millions of Shopify stores. It also supports checking inventory, comparing products based on budgets and preferences, and setting shopping rules. Purchases can be completed through Shop Pay, and searches can be used without logging in.
shop.dev is a developer platform for embedding Shopify shopping functionality into AI agents and apps via MCP. Product searches, inventory checks, cart creation, checkout and order tracking can be used without an API key. A mechanism is provided under which the buyer themselves approves the purchase.
Shopify users are expected to have more opportunities to connect with consumers and businesses, and Shopify says existing Catalog API integrations do not need to be changed. Attention is expected to focus on the future development and adoption of both tools.
