The new Mac Studio has been announced with the M5 Max and M5 Ultra added to the lineup, with prices in Japan starting at ¥419,800 for the Max and ¥949,800 for the Ultra. The launch date is 22 September, and pre-orders begin today.
In Japan, the memory options have been expanded to 36/48/64/96/128/256GB, restoring capacities that had been removed over the past year. The 512GB configuration will be added in late October for this new product and will not be available for the 22 September launch.
Among the additional upgrade options, upgrading memory from 96GB to 256GB costs an additional ¥720,000, while expanding storage to 16TB costs an additional ¥1,350,000, with many configurations incurring substantial price increases. The M5 Ultra features a Neural Accelerator, improving AI computing performance, while only the Ultra uses Thunderbolt 5 for its front ports.
Although the Ultra's 512GB option will be available later, a broad range of configurations, including 512GB, will be offered. The possibility of connecting up to 4 devices via Thunderbolt 5 and distributed AI inference has also been highlighted. Developments in the lineup alongside the Mac mini with the M6 have also been reported, clarifying the positioning of each generation.
