The Foreign Ministry's FY2027 budget request totals approximately ¥1.2 trillion and sets out a policy to expand the use of security-related ODA and OSA (Official Security Assistance).
The Foreign Ministry's draft FY2027 budget request has been disclosed, with the total expected to reach approximately ¥1.2 trillion, including ¥200 billion–¥300 billion for a new investment framework aimed at economic growth. This is expected to be the first time the request has exceeded ¥1 trillion, surpassing the ¥1.0014 trillion combined total of the FY2026 initial budget and the FY2025 supplementary budget, which was the previous minimum. Government officials disclosed the figures on the 21st.
Security-related official development assistance (ODA) is expected to support the stabilization of sea lanes and infrastructure development, including ports and airports in like-minded countries, with the aim of creating a security environment favorable to Japan. ODA programs focused on growth strategies and economic security are also expected to be rolled out.
The government plans to expand the framework for using OSA (Official Security Assistance), a program to strengthen the security capabilities of partner countries. Approximately ¥100 million has been allocated for the full-scale launch of the Foreign Ministry's newly established International Peace Mediation Unit, which aims to prevent conflicts and bring them to an early end.
