Volvo has revealed plans to unveil a new concept car in 2027, marking its 100th anniversary. Design chief Thomas Ingenlath suggested that physical buttons would be reintroduced, saying the company would seek an appropriate balance between touchscreens and physical controls in its interiors.
Volvo has announced plans to unveil a new concept car next year to mark its 100th anniversary. At the presentation, design chief Thomas Ingenlath indicated that the company intends to reintroduce physical controls in future models.
In line with plans to launch 13 new models worldwide by the end of 2030, Ingenlath suggested that Volvo would introduce a new design language. He said the company would place emphasis on elements of tradition and history as the foundation of its design.
For interiors, Volvo said it was considering a region-specific approach based on its past policies, as well as those of Polestar, its brand offshoot. The company plans to increase the number of physical buttons while reducing its reliance on screens. Models for the Chinese market may feature more screens.
The design chief reiterated that the company would pursue a balance between digital and physical interaction as a “better harmony,” while limiting the uses of screens and minimizing the amount of information displayed.
Volvo’s new design is expected to be based on traditional elements such as the iron mark and the long-standing forms surrounding the grille, with the aim of preserving the brand’s distinct identity.
