JAL and Toyota Industries will expand testing at Haneda Airport of a towing tractor capable of Level 4 autonomous driving. From November, they will conduct driving trials on a new route that is more challenging than the current route, testing the applicability of links with shared infrastructure and various operating conditions.
JAL began commercial deployment on 15 December 2025 of autonomous towing tractors that use shared infrastructure, including signal equipment and cameras. This testing builds on that initiative and is intended to identify operational challenges going forward.
Through the testing, the companies aim to reduce labor requirements in ground-handling operations and environmental impact. They are also considering deploying the existing technology in different driving environments and under different operating conditions, as well as expanding its application to airports nationwide.
