The bereaved families of 50 Chinese victims who they say were forcibly mobilized to Japan during the war have filed a complaint with a court in Hebei Province, China, seeking damages from 6 Japanese companies.
The plaintiff group is seeking approximately ¥8.5 million per person in damages, as well as an apology advertisement and other relief. The court has not yet decided whether to accept the case.
A representative of the plaintiff group said the course of proceedings in China would depend on the wishes of the Communist Party leadership, explaining that the court’s decision on whether to accept the case would be a key focus.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Japan to respond appropriately regarding its historical understanding and responsibility, while the Japanese government indicated that it would refrain from commenting on the matter, which it regards as a civil lawsuit.
