The Nikkei 225 extended its gains in the Tokyo stock market on the morning of the 8th, at one point rising by more than ¥300. Buying in semiconductor stocks and expectations for AI-related demand provided support, while the stronger yen weighed on the market.
The Nikkei 225 extended its gains in the Tokyo stock market on the morning of the 8th, at one point rising ¥318.99 to ¥66,718.83. The market focused on the resilience of AI demand, and buying in semiconductor-related stocks supported prices.
It opened immediately after the opening bell at ¥65,843.69, down ¥556.15 from the previous day, but semiconductor stocks subsequently attracted buying as the SOX Index rose. SoftBank Group, Advantest and Tokyo Electron alone lifted the Nikkei 225 by approximately ¥600.
As of 10:15 a.m., the Nikkei 225 had reversed an earlier decline of more than ¥600 and moved into positive territory. There was also a view that the stronger yen and higher crude oil prices would weigh on market sentiment, and the TOPIX remained in negative territory.
The morning closing level was ¥66,445.13 for the Nikkei 225, up ¥45.29 from the previous day. Some market participants said sustained investment related to AI would support semiconductor stocks, while concerns remained over the earnings outlook for export companies due to the impact of the stronger yen.
