Apple unveiled a new MacBook Pro with touch operation support for the first time on a Mac on 28 October local time. The lineup comprises 14-inch and 16-inch models, with pre-orders accepted in Japan from the 29th and the launch scheduled for 6 November.
The model's key feature is its PROLED XDR display, which combines two layers of self-emissive pixels. Peak brightness is 2,000 nits for both HDR and SDR, with a contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1. The display supports the P3 and Adobe RGB color gamuts and has a variable refresh rate of 10–120Hz.
Touch operation enables users to scroll, pinch and rotate directly on the screen. Examples include drawing directly in Pixelmator Pro, moving clips in Final Cut Pro and playing an on-screen keyboard in Logic Pro. Dynamic Island has also been introduced on the Mac for notifications and information display, with support for Spotlight and Siri AI.
The available chips are the M5 Pro and M5 Max, with up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of SSD storage. The M5 Max is said to be capable of running LLMs with hundreds of billions of parameters on the device. The 14-inch model weighs 1.38kg, the 16-inch model 1.82kg, and battery life is up to 24 hours. The models also feature Thunderbolt 5 ports and other specifications.
