OBAYASHI CORPORATION announced that it has developed the Krabbe Wagen method, a new construction method that significantly streamlines pier-cap construction for PC bridges. The method eliminates the need for conventional large brackets and builds the pier cap using mobile work platforms with minor modifications, reducing the work required to assemble and dismantle temporary supports and formwork. This is also expected to improve worksite safety.
The new method builds the pier cap in 3 stages. The main components are arranged to allow mobile work platforms to be installed even on narrow pier caps, and 2 mobile work platforms are used to avoid interference. Once the pier cap is complete, an added sliding mechanism allows the equipment to be returned to its conventional position and restored in a short time.
The method is expected to reduce the construction process and labor requirements by approximately 30% compared with the conventional method, while improving safety by reducing work at height. Specifically, a process comparison shows that the construction period can be reduced from the conventional 140 days to approximately 100 days.
For ease of adoption, the method has been designed around modifications that use existing equipment, making application after contract award easier. Additional components and a sliding mechanism are provided to return the main components to their original positions, allowing a quick transition to the conventional process after pier-cap construction. Going forward, the company will promote application across PC bridge construction and the development of related technologies.
