NEXCO Central Japan announced that it will install new physical devices at 2 locations on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway in Gifu Prefecture to prevent wrong-way driving. A road-embedded blade will be installed at Gujo-Hachiman IC, while a wedge hump will be installed at neighboring Minami IC by early December.
On 22 October 2026, the Nagoya Branch of NEXCO Central Japan announced that it was proceeding with the installation of new physical countermeasures at 2 locations in Gifu Prefecture to prevent wrong-way driving on expressways. The sites are Gujo-Hachiman IC and Minami IC, where devices will be introduced for the first time in the branch’s jurisdiction.
At Gujo-Hachiman IC, a road-embedded blade will be installed from mid-November 2026. The blade protrudes from the road surface and sinks down when vehicles travel in the correct direction, but gives a wrong-way vehicle an impact to alert the driver, according to the explanation.
At Minami IC, a wedge hump is scheduled to be installed from early December. The technology consists of a single-slope hump on the road surface that generates vibration and impact when a wrong-way vehicle mounts it, issuing a warning. At both interchanges, the devices will be installed at flat intersections where wrong-way driving is more likely, and the construction will require nighttime closures.
