Nexera Pharma announced a new licensing agreement with major US pharmaceutical company AbbVie. The upfront payment is $100 million, but the deal is expected to generate multiple layers of future revenue, including milestones and sales royalties. The counterparties are the three major companies AbbVie, Lilly and Neurocrine, making future cash flows the focus of attention.
After the close of trading on 4 November 2026, Nexera Pharma announced a new licensing agreement with AbbVie. The agreement covers “NXE0033744,” an oral drug candidate for inflammatory bowel disease. In exchange for granting worldwide rights, Nexera Pharma will receive an upfront payment of $100 million, up to $1.37 billion in milestones tied to development and commercial progress, and royalties linked to sales. The share price rose sharply the following day.
Nexera Pharma, formerly Sosei Group, is a dual-track company. It uses drug-discovery technology targeting GPCRs to generate drug candidates, grants the rights to major pharmaceutical companies worldwide in return for compensation, and sells drugs itself in Japan and Asia.
Future revenue, however, carries the risk of being affected by the success or failure of clinical trials and the business decisions of alliance partners. In the past, Pfizer and Boehringer Ingelheim declined to develop or take on certain candidates, and some observers believe the earnings outlook for the current fiscal year depends on this upfront payment.
The compensation generated by the agreement as “future money” consists not only of the upfront payment but also of milestones and royalties. The counterparties are the three companies AbbVie, Lilly and Neurocrine, and the nature and timing of revenue from each agreement differ.
