A special exhibition, “Hara Yasaburo Collection: Hokusai × Hiroshige,” featuring the ukiyo-e collection assembled by Hara Yasaburo (原安三郎), who was known as the chairman of chemical manufacturer Nippon Kayaku, is being held at the Akita Prefectural Museum of Modern Art in Yokote, Akita Prefecture. The first period runs through 8 November, and the second period runs from 10 November through 6 December, with approximately 220 works on display.
The exhibition focuses on series such as Katsushika Hokusai’s landscape print series “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji,” Utagawa Hiroshige’s “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido,” and “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji,” allowing visitors to appreciate the differences in Hokusai’s and Hiroshige’s styles together. Works being shown publicly for the first time, as well as picture scrolls made at the request of Hara Yasaburo (原安三郎), are also featured.
This is the first time the exhibition has been held in Tohoku. Most of the works on display are scheduled to be changed between the first and second periods, and visitors are being encouraged to attend both. Admission is ¥1,200 for adults, ¥800 for high school and university students, and free for junior high school students and younger. The museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The museum’s curator said he hopes visitors will fully enjoy the rich world of Edo. Inquiries should be directed to the museum by telephone, and readers considering a visit should check the relevant information in advance.
