An account is given of a comparison between a Saizeriya receipt from 23 years ago found at the writer’s family home and the bill for recreating the same order today.
While visiting their family home and decluttering, the writer found a Saizeriya receipt dated 15 July 2003. The receipt listed menu items that are still available today, including peperoncino, hamburger steak and the drink bar. The writer planned to revisit the restaurant with the same friend after 23 years and decided to order the same items.
The 2003 receipt listed peperoncino at ¥290, hamburger steak at ¥380, the drink bar at ¥100 × 2, corn cream soup at ¥180 × 2, mushroom risotto at ¥380, Margherita pizza at ¥380 and cinnamon focaccia at ¥150. Toast was shown as ¥0, apparently because the order may have been cancelled. The subtotal was ¥2,140, consumption tax was ¥107 and the total was ¥2,247.
In September 2026, the writer revisited Saizeriya with the same friend and ordered almost the same items as at the time. Peperoncino, hamburger steak, corn cream soup and Margherita pizza are still sold, but mushroom risotto is no longer available. Instead, the writer tried a risotto-style combination of onion zuppa and small rice.
Comparing the bills from 23 years ago and today, the 2003 bill was a subtotal of ¥2,140 plus ¥107 in consumption tax, for a total of ¥2,247, while the 2026 bill came to ¥2,400 including tax for almost the same items, a difference of ¥153. Although there were differences in the tax rate and menu items, the writer commented that the overall price range had not changed significantly despite the passage of so many years.
