Japanese stocks remained stuck in a narrow range ahead of the US midterm elections. Some AI and semiconductor-related stocks were sold, while dip-buying also emerged.
(速報) The Nikkei 225 opened slightly higher before the afternoon session and then remained stuck in a narrow range, as it had in the morning. Market participants expect the wait-and-see stance to strengthen toward the close because of the US midterm elections and the public holiday the following day.
The Nikkei 225 stood at ¥63,369.28 at the afternoon opening, a slight increase from the morning close. Some AI and semiconductor-related stocks, including Tokyo Electron and Advantest, rose at times, but buying and selling were broadly balanced across the market.
In the day's trading, 68% of stocks fell and 29% rose, indicating generally weak market breadth. Trading volume reached 1.02181 billion shares, while trading value was ¥3.799 trillion.
At the morning close, the Nikkei 225 was trending lower from the previous weekend's close, and the overall market's weakness was evident in response to movements in high-tech stocks. Activity in AI and semiconductor stocks remained limited into the afternoon, as investors continued to assess the direction of the US market.
