At its booth at the Hokuriku Broadcast Equipment Show 2026, Canon demonstrated the EOS C50’s ability to record 2K footage for vertical video simultaneously while shooting horizontal footage, as well as changing the angle of view with digital zoom.
The EOS C50 was demonstrated as a hands-on exhibit at the venue, attracting attention for its simultaneous horizontal and vertical recording and digital zoom capabilities. While shooting full-frame 4K footage, the camera can simultaneously record separate 2K footage for vertical or square formats as a separate stream. A frame for the additional footage is displayed on screen, enabling compositions to be planned for both horizontal and vertical uses at the time of shooting.
Digital zoom can be used at up to 4x even with a prime lens attached, allowing the angle of view to be changed without increasing the number of lens changes. This was explained as an opportunity to reconsider equipment configurations on site. Combining the camera with a wide-angle zoom lens was also proposed as a way to supplement the telephoto range when needed.
Remote cameras including the CR-N400 were also introduced. They offer 40x zoom and both horizontal and vertical video output, with internal SD card recording planned for a future update. This was presented as supporting the extraction of footage from the site, backup operations, and integration between IP-based transfer and playback.
Overall, the presentation shared a perspective on how to use a single camera at the shooting site while planning the workflow through to the subsequent deployment of the recorded material. It indicated the potential for the EOS C50 and CR-N400 to connect different categories, cinema cameras and PTZ cameras, along a single production workflow.
