Aomori-based Okamura Foods Co.,Ltd. continues to grow through salmon farming and processing and overseas wholesale operations, reaching record highs of ¥42.7 billion in sales and ¥3.87 billion in operating profit for the fiscal year ending June 2026. Domestic landings fell short of plan, but the company aims to expand supply through measures including the operation of an intermediate farming facility, targeting landings of more than 10,000 tonnes and sales of ¥62.0 billion in fiscal 2030.
Positioning domestic salmon farming and overseas wholesale as its two growth pillars, Okamura Foods Co.,Ltd. posted record consolidated sales of ¥42.7 billion and operating profit of ¥3.87 billion for the fiscal year ending June 2026. Compared with the fiscal year ended June 2021, five years earlier, sales increased approximately 2.1 times and operating profit approximately 2.6 times. Domestic landings totaled 3,383 tonnes during the period, below the planned 4,300 tonnes, while overseas wholesale sales grew more than fourfold over five years, supporting growth.
The two growth engines for the domestic market are expanded farming volumes and stable demand from the food-service industry, while overseas market demand is also growing. The background includes increased domestic consumption despite population decline and the impact of shortages of wild-caught fish. Poor catches of autumn chum salmon in Hokkaido and in Alaskan and Russian waters have also contributed, making a stable supply of farmed fish an important raw material for the food-service industry.
Factors contributing to the decline in landings in 2026 included cold-water disease at the intermediate farming facility, delayed growth caused by bacterial infections in marine waters and early harvesting in response to strong demand. Despite these issues, the company's intermediate farming facility at Tomarigawa, Akita, began operating in October, with an increase of approximately 1,000 tonnes expected. The company assumes 5,000 tonnes as a firm level.
Looking ahead, the company has announced a medium-term management target of more than 10,000 tonnes in landings and ¥62.0 billion in sales for the fiscal year ending June 2030, and plans to continue expanding domestic demand and strengthening overseas wholesale operations to sustain growth.
The company background includes its founding in 1971 and the fact that the Aomori-based company previously suffered a substantial loss of equity capital in a 2002 fire.
