The Nikkei 225 opened lower on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, falling 372.90 yen from the previous day to ¥68,847.35, as selling prevailed mainly in large-cap stocks following the decline in U.S. equities. The index subsequently extended its decline and was trading around 0.8% lower during the day.
By sector, shipping and nonferrous metals at times resisted the decline, while other products and retail stocks fell. Trading in major stocks was the main driver of market direction.
Among individual stocks, Toyota Motor edged lower. AI- and semiconductor-related stocks Advantest and Kioxia Holdings were weak. Fast Retailing, which has a high contribution to the index, fell, while SoftBank Group was firm and Rakuten Group rose more than 2% and remained strong.
The market was primarily shaped by trading after the domestic open in the wake of the decline in U.S. stocks, with caution spreading among investors.
