BOJ Governor Ueda Kazuo (植田 和男) spoke at an IMF-hosted event in Washington, D.C., saying that Japan's inflation rate had reached the authorities' target, while expressing the view that its sustainability remained unclear. During the question-and-answer session after his speech, he reiterated his view that underlying inflation was at 2%, while it remained uncertain whether current conditions would stabilise.
The governor also expressed the view that people's thinking and practices premised on 2% inflation had not yet become sufficiently established throughout society. This suggested that further consistency would be needed in the conduct of policy and the way it is explained going forward.
