The Nikkei 225 started trading on the 16th at ¥64,925.29, up ¥499.34 at the open. Buying led the market, and stocks including BayCurrent and SHIFT rose.
The Nikkei 225 opened in Tokyo on the 16th at ¥64,925.29, up ¥499.34 from the previous day. US equities had rebounded, with the Dow closing up $556.21 and the Nasdaq Composite up 20.16 points, and the Nikkei continued to attract buying after the open.
In the US market, concerns over AI-related investment and the burden of raising funds remained, but buying of US Treasuries and the resulting decline in long-term interest rates supported share prices. Across sectors, there was also a tendency for buying aimed at a technical rebound.
Among the most heavily traded stocks on the TSE Prime Market, BayCurrent<6532> and SHIFT<3697> rose. Other products, services, electric appliances, information and communications, and real estate were among the top-performing sectors, while Hioki E.E.<6866>, IDOM<7599>, Takashimaya<8233> and Tomen Devices<2737> declined.
The dollar was trading in the mid-¥157 range, and movements in the yen remained a focus for the market. Although the Nikkei’s advance after the open lost some momentum, it held at a high level. The Nikkei remained firm throughout the day, standing at ¥65,237.39, up ¥811.44, as of 9:31 a.m.
