KiGi AKIHABARA received the Commissioner of the Forestry Agency Award in the FY2026 Wood Use Promotion Competition. The award recognized its use of domestic timber throughout a nine-story above-ground hybrid timber-and-steel office building in central Tokyo and its efforts to promote the wider use of timber-based technologies.
KiGi AKIHABARA is a nine-story above-ground building with a hybrid structure combining a steel-frame core and a timber frame. The project used 87.31 m3 of domestic timber in columns, beams, floors and seismic-resistance members, and adopted environmentally considerate λ-WOODⅡ®, Dress Wood® and KS timber buckling-restrained braces. The project is estimated to have reduced steel consumption by approximately 59.1 t and construction-related CO2 emissions by approximately 112.28 t.
The release highlights the project's receipt of the Commissioner of the Forestry Agency Award in the Outstanding Facilities category of the Wood Use Promotion Competition, its extensive use of domestic timber, the application of jointly developed technologies and its lower environmental impact compared with a steel-frame building of similar scale.
KiGi AKIHABARA is pursuing a business concept that implements timber use and environmental value in an urban office building. The building is scheduled for completion on 29 May 2026 and is located at 2-8-16 Higashikanda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. The project will continue to pursue value creation through spaces and activities using timber and timber-based technologies.
