The Nikkei Average fell for a fourth straight day, closing at ¥64,214. It rose at the open on gains in U.S. stocks, but lost momentum in the afternoon and closed after failing to remain in positive territory.
On the 3rd, the Nikkei Average fell for a fourth straight day, closing ¥111 lower at ¥64,214. It opened nearly ¥400 higher against the backdrop of gains in U.S. stocks, but quickly lost momentum as it moved between positive and negative territory during the session before sinking into the red. Although it at one point widened its losses, the index ended the morning session up by three digits.
The index traded temporarily in positive territory during the afternoon, but AI-related stocks, including Advantest and Fujikura, led the market lower. At around 2 p.m., the Nikkei Average's decline widened to more than ¥500. Some stocks subsequently recovered at times, limiting the market's negative reaction, but the index ended late trading without returning to positive territory or moving higher again.
Unlike the Nikkei Average, the TOPIX never fell into negative territory during the day and traded without moving below the previous day's close. Estimated trading value was ¥7.57 trillion, while trading volume was 2.18 billion shares. By sector, wholesale, electric power and gas, and marine transportation rose, while mining, nonferrous metals, and foods fell.
Among individual stocks, Cosmo Energy Holdings rose sharply, while WO LVES HAND plunged after announcing a share offering.
