Mitchells & Butlers, the UK pub and restaurant chain, is expanding its estate and improving margins, with sales recovering to £2.711 billion in the fiscal year ended September 2025.
Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) operates a large number of pubs, bars and restaurants in the UK, with its total number of locations reaching 1,718 at the end of September 2025. Most are company-operated, while London accounts for 21% of sales. Outside the UK, Germany accounts for approximately 4% of sales, a relatively small share.
The company traces its origins to 1898, when a brewer and a pub operator merged, and adopted its current name in 2003. In 2014, it acquired Orchid Pub Group, expanding its estate and strengthening its presence in the UK foodservice market. Its current sales mix is 53% meals, 43% drinks and 4% services.
Sales fell sharply as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in the fiscal years ended September 2020 and 2021, but subsequently recovered. Sales reached £2.711 billion (approximately ¥585.5 billion) in the fiscal year ended September 2025. Compared with Japanese companies, the scale of this multi-brand restaurant chain highlights the difference in market size. Investment in its estate continues.
