豊月’s new president, Toyooka Soichiro (豊岡総一郎), began internal reforms 4 months after taking office. The company aims to improve productivity across departments while strengthening its fresh-food business, centered on seafood and fresh-food markets.
豊月 is a supermarket headquartered in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, and is working to establish a new management structure while carrying on the culture inherited from its founder. Since Toyooka Soichiro (豊岡総一郎), formerly an executive managing director, became president in April, the company has outlined a policy of identifying and addressing internal challenges.
Strengthening governance was identified as the first priority. The company explained that it would redefine the responsibilities of executives and managers, put an appropriate structure in place, and also address risk management.
The company’s policy of strengthening the business centers on introducing a fresh-food market format, with the aim of increasing the fresh-food mix across 4 departments—meat, produce, seafood and deli—with a particular focus on seafood. It is prioritizing operational practices that reflect input from frontline employees, including having everyone participate in decisions on product flavor profiles.
A distinguishing feature is the effort to improve productivity across the fresh-food business by breaking down departmental barriers. Initiatives not seen at competing companies are under way, including improvements to the deli business and an expanded selection of wagyu beef.
