The Nikkei Average opened the afternoon session with selling dominant, at around ¥64,711.70, down ¥612.59 from the ¥64,534.03 level at the morning close. During the day, losses at one point widened to more than ¥1,400 from the morning session, but narrowed after the selling subsided, and the index recovered and briefly updated its high for the day.
Among the most actively traded stocks by turnover on the TSE Prime Market, Advantest, Taiyo Yuden, SoftBank Group, Lasertec, Ibiden, Murata Manufacturing, Tokyo Electron and Disco fell. Declines in these and other major stocks contributed to the overall market's weakness and indicated broad selling pressure.
By sector, mining, oil and coal products, and marine transportation ranked among the top gainers. Although the market did not fall across the board, selling remained dominant overall for part of the session. In the afternoon, declines in major stocks were contained and the broader index showed a modest rebound.
