Lumentum, a major optical components company, announced that it will exhibit high-density D2D optical interconnect technology for vertically scalable architectures within AI racks at ECOC 2026, being held in Spain, jointly with Qualcomm and Corning. The demo integrates Qualcomm's D2D interface IP, Lumentum's 1060nm VCSEL-based optical engine and Corning's multimode fiber connectivity, with emerging D2D standards such as UCIe in mind for future CPO and NPO applications.
Following the announcement, US optical communications stocks rose broadly, strengthening market expectations for demand for optical interconnects driven by AI computing. Lumentum announced the demo on the 21st and said its transmit and receive capacity was approximately 10 Tb/s, while its share price also rose that day.
Capital markets responded quickly to the partnership announcement. Lumentum rose 2.53% on the 21st to $954.49, while Corning gained 5.89% to $158.98, both closing at new highs. Other optical communications stocks, including Applied Optoelectronics and POET Technologies, also rose in sympathy.
AXT was added to the S&P SmallCap 600 and surged 14.14% on the same day to $79.93, drawing market attention as an InP substrate supplier. Across the market, views have strengthened that demand for optical interconnects in AI infrastructure is beginning to surpass that for conventional electrical wiring.
