The 35 stocks newly added to the next TOPIX and the stocks subject to transitional measures have been announced, and the new stock selection rules will take effect on 30 October. The inclusion weights of stocks subject to transitional measures will be reduced in stages through 2028.
On 7 October 2026, the Tokyo Stock Exchange announced the stocks newly added to the next TOPIX and those subject to transitional measures. There will be 35 new additions and 683 stocks subject to transitional measures, and the new stock selection rules will take effect on 30 October. As a result, the inclusion of stocks will be considered based on criteria such as market capitalisation and liquidity, regardless of market segment.
The 35 newly added stocks announced were listed in descending order of market capitalisation, together with their closing share prices and market capitalisations as of 7 October. TOPIX calculates weights using the free-float ratio for new additions, but the specific weights had not been finalised at the time of the announcement.
The buying demand from TOPIX-linked funds, estimated at around ¥165 trillion, for the newly added stocks may vary depending on the applicable free-float ratios. The new additions are expected to attract buying demand, while stocks subject to transitional measures are likely to face selling pressure, drawing attention to future supply and demand trends.
Despite the pain involved in the system transition, the TOPIX reform is positioned as an initiative aimed at improving market representativeness and investability. The transition period will be implemented in stages, with a reassessment in 2027 and gradual adjustments through 2028, with the long-term aim of creating an index that better reflects share price trends among growth companies.
