Full-scale shipments of “Sanriku Caviar: Ofunato’s Shizuku” have begun in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, and a ceremony marking the start of full-scale shipments was held at the Ofunato City Industrial Festival. The product is also expected to be offered as a hometown tax donation gift, while expansion through an e-commerce site is under way.
Four years after the business began, full-scale shipments of fresh caviar have started as a model case combining land-based aquaculture and hydroponic cultivation through aquaponics, an environmentally conscious form of circular agriculture.
A ceremony commemorating the start of full-scale shipments was held at the Ofunato City Industrial Festival on 10 and 11 October, with approximately 30 people in attendance. Congratulatory remarks were delivered by the mayor of Ofunato and the vice chairman of the Ofunato Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In addition to the caviar, promotional activities for lettuce, fried sturgeon skewers and prizes distributed during a rice-cake toss were provided.
Looking ahead, the company plans to expand full-scale shipments nationwide in autumn, following the initial shipment in February 2026. The products are also expected to be featured in limited menus at restaurants inside and outside the prefecture, sold to cruise ships and adopted as hometown tax donation gifts, while preparations for an e-commerce site are under way.
