JR Hokkaido’s Kushiro Branch Office announced details of the final run of the Kushiro Shitsugen Norokko train. Operations will end after 37 years, dating back to its launch in 1989, with the final runs scheduled for 9 and 10 October. As part of a special program along the route in light of the aging rolling stock, limited-edition boarding certificates and a commemorative headmark will be offered, along with events around the stations.
The Kushiro Shitsugen Norokko train is a sightseeing train that began operating in 1989. It initially ran at approximately 30 km/h, attracting attention as Japan’s slowest train. During its 37-year history, the rolling stock was replaced with a second-generation train, but operations are scheduled to end at the close of 2026 because of the aging rolling stock.
During the final run, limited-edition, postcard-sized boarding certificates with different designs for the outbound and return services will be distributed. The train is also scheduled to operate with a special final-run headmark displayed for 2 days only.
At stations along the Senmo Line, local people will welcome and see off the train with banners. Local mascots will appear and regional specialty products will be sold at Kushiro, Shibecha and Kawayu-Onsen stations.
A departure ceremony is scheduled to take place at Kushiro Station on the 10th, the final day. A “Message Box” will be installed in the concourse at Kushiro Station through 13 October. JR Hokkaido’s Kushiro Branch Office is calling on many people to come and see the train off.
