Meta is developing Max 2, a second-generation humanoid robot, but it is reportedly still a long way from practical use in the home. The first prototype was developed in approximately 3 months and has a maximum weight of about 48 kg.
Meta is developing Max 2, a second-generation humanoid robot, in cooperation with China's Fourier. Max is part of research aimed at enabling robots to perform tasks in home environments, and the timing of a commercial launch is reportedly undecided at this point.
The first Max prototype is approximately 1.5 meters tall and is equipped with NVIDIA's Jetson Thor chip, a display and speakers that mimic facial expressions, and five-fingered hands. Demonstrations of the robot grasping small objects have also been reported, but significant technical challenges remain before it can become a practical home robot.
Development of Max 2 reportedly began around September 2024. Specifications under consideration include a redesigned torso, improved grasping accuracy, and a projector and additional sensors to enable the robot to perform more physical tasks. The design is also intended to support operation in complex environments such as staircases.
As part of a long-term strategy linked to Muse AI, Meta is positioning robots as physical extensions of AI. Meta is strengthening its collaborations, including through the acquisition of Assured Robot Intelligence and cooperation with NVIDIA. Ensuring stable operation and safety is considered a key challenge for practical use in the home.
