Salaries for national civil servants in fiscal 2026 will rise by an average of 3.51%, or ¥15,056. The wide-area transfer allowance will also be increased, and the government, following the recommendation, plans to establish wage increases exceeding inflation and is considering legislative amendments.
The National Personnel Authority recommended raising salaries for national civil servants in fiscal 2026, indicating that monthly pay for administrative service employees would rise by an average of 3.51%, or ¥15,056. Reflecting private-sector wage trends, the increase is expected to exceed 3% for the second consecutive year.
The recommendation includes raising the payment rate for the wide-area transfer allowance to enhance salary incentives for wide-area transfers. The measures are intended to improve the treatment of national civil servants and form part of broader work-style reforms.
Following the recommendation, Prime Minister Takaichi (高市) stated that the government would seek to establish wage increases exceeding inflation in Japan and consider measures including future legislative amendments. Takaichi (高市) also expressed the view that the measures would help secure highly capable personnel while protecting the livelihoods of the public and Japan’s national interests.
