Synspective was selected as the Japanese corporate partner for a Jamaica-focused project in the sixth phase of the UNDP's Japan SDGs Innovation Challenge and will conduct a coastal-monitoring demonstration using satellite data and AI. The project is expected to run through February 2027.
Synspective was selected as the Japanese corporate partner for a monitoring demonstration project aimed at adapting to rising sea levels and strengthening climate resilience in Jamaica's Portland Bight Protected Area. It will work with the UNDP Jamaica Multi-Country Office.
The project will use satellite data and AI to map coastal habitats and detect changes, quantifying the distribution and changes in habitats such as mangroves and wetlands. It will also map flooded areas to rapidly assess inundation following hurricanes and storm surges.
Going forward, Synspective will work with local organizations to conduct validation and promote the use of the results, while supporting the development of a system through which government agencies can request satellite observations. The project is scheduled to run through February 2027, with future expansion to other areas of Jamaica and the Caribbean under consideration.
Through this initiative, Synspective aims to contribute to the achievement of SDGs 11, 13 and 14.
