Sumitomo Electric Industries has developed the new MML-type head for the SEC-MultiDrill SMD type and plans to launch it in spring 2027 for machining stainless steel and difficult-to-cut materials. The design is expected to improve tool life and reduce costs compared with existing products.
Sumitomo Electric Industries has developed the new MML-type head for its replaceable-head drill and will launch it in spring 2027. The head is intended for machining stainless steel and difficult-to-cut materials, with the aim of reducing the cost burden associated with solid carbide drills.
The new head features a structure that combines stable engagement through proprietary thinning with the hardness and durability of HF coating. The company says its straight cutting-edge geometry enables stable machining and extended tool life even under demanding machining conditions.
The MML-type lineup covers cutting diameters from Ø12.0 mm to Ø30.8 mm and consists of 189 model numbers. For reference, the company also cites the launch in October 2025 of the MHL-type high-efficiency machining head for the SEC-MultiDrill SMD type.
