As expectations of a Bank of Japan rate hike grew and the yen strengthened, the finance official's remarks about maintaining a state of readiness and the market's reaction were reported. The yen temporarily surged to the ¥155 range.
As the yen strengthened in the foreign exchange market, Finance Ministry official Mimura (三村) indicated that he intended to remain on a state of readiness regarding currency movements. He expressed a stance of continued vigilance while avoiding specific comments.
The yen had been trading at around ¥160 to the dollar, its weakest level since the yen-buying intervention at the end of July, before temporarily surging to the ¥155 range shortly after 8 p.m. on the 3rd, a yen appreciation of more than ¥4.
In addition, US Treasury Secretary Bessent (ベッセント) disclosed on social media that he had discussed the normalization of Japan's monetary policy in a meeting with Bank of Japan Governor Ueda (植田), further strengthening expectations that the BOJ's pace of rate hikes could accelerate.
The yen's strengthening trend has continued in response to market movements, and current trading reflects developments since the surge on the afternoon of the 3rd.
