GlobalFoundries, a major US semiconductor foundry, has disclosed plans to build 2 plants in northern New York State. The semiconductors produced are intended for automobiles, industrial equipment and communications infrastructure, and the company is reportedly expanding its regional presence against a backdrop of increased capital investment.
Based on this plan, the Japanese government has indicated that it is expected to invest up to $21 billion, approximately ¥3.3 trillion, under a framework for investment and loans to the United States. Tokyo Electron and others have been mentioned as Japanese companies that may cooperate.
The investment and plant construction are intended to strengthen relations between the Japanese and US governments and reinforce the semiconductor supply chain. As the framework for cooperation among Japanese companies takes shape, this could create additional business opportunities for Japan's semiconductor-related companies.
