Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Himino Ryozo (氷見野 良三) said the BOJ will remain more mindful than before of upside inflation risks in conducting monetary policy going forward and discuss them thoroughly at every monetary policy meeting. The speech was held in Saitama.
At the July monetary policy meeting, the policy rate was kept at around 1.0%. Governor Ueda Kazuo (植田 和男) emphasized upside inflation risks at a press conference and also referred to the possibility of accelerating the pace of rate hikes. In response, the government intervened to correct yen depreciation, and yen buying proceeded in coordination with the United States, raising market expectations of an early rate hike.
The remarks are being viewed as signaling a stronger focus on risk recognition in future policy conduct. Attention is expected to remain focused on short-term market and interest-rate trends.
