UEX’s daily price-limit rise in the afternoon session is reportedly linked to spillover through its key supplier, Daido Steel. The focus is on how the recovery in semiconductor demand and the growing pass-through of price increases will affect upstream manufacturers.
UEX announced an upward revision to its earnings forecast during the afternoon session on 22 October 2026 and briefly hit the daily price limit even as the Nikkei average was falling. The company cited its ability to pass higher prices through to selling prices in the stainless steel bar business, as well as a rapid recovery in semiconductor-related demand.
UEX explains on its website that, in the stainless steel bar business, it has the largest sales volume of Daido Steel products. This suggests that Daido Steel lies at the root of the trend’s underlying source. Daido Steel is a specialist steelmaker producing specialty steels used in automobiles, industrial machinery, aircraft engines and semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
The greatest risk, however, is that raw material and energy prices rise first, with the recovery of those costs through higher prices following later. The majority of sales are to the automotive sector, so the impact on earnings may emerge with a time lag depending on trends in growth areas.
This article explains how movements at UEX, a downstream trading company, may serve as a leading signal for gauging manufacturers’ earnings trends, as well as the types of information that should be monitored subsequently.
