Defense Minister Koizumi Shinjiro (小泉進次郎) inspected the former Kure Area site in Kure City, which was acquired from Nippon Steel Corporation, and expressed his intention to pursue its early development. The approximately 130-hectare site is to be developed into a multifunctional defense hub equipped with Self-Defense Force buildings and defense equipment manufacturing facilities.
The project is positioned as an initiative that will help secure sustainable response capabilities and strengthen Japan’s domestic defense equipment production base, in light of Russia’s prolonged invasion of Ukraine. Plans also call for attracting private-sector companies to the site, raising expectations locally for job creation and economic revitalization.
Koizumi Shinjiro (小泉進次郎) said recruitment of companies began on the 1st of this month and indicated that companies would be selected while also taking their contribution to the local economy into consideration.
