The Nikkei fell for a second consecutive trading day in Tokyo on 14 September, closing at ¥63,492.99. Selling in AI-related stocks and OpenAI's decision to postpone its IPO moved the market.
The Nikkei Stock Average remained weak throughout trading in Tokyo on 14 September, closing at ¥63,492.99, down ¥518.35 from the previous day. It fell sharply at one point in the morning, but buying to cover positions emerged in the afternoon, narrowing the decline by the close.
The day's decline was attributed in part to stronger selling in the major AI- and semiconductor-related stocks that had been driving the market. Caution over the growth outlook for US-based AI companies heightened market concerns and spread to Tokyo.
Meanwhile, the Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) closed at 4,058.21, up 0.74%, as inflows into a broad range of stocks, including domestic-demand names, supported overall market conditions. Although declines in semiconductor-related stocks weighed on the Nikkei, the broader market showed signs of increased risk appetite.
The market's focus was OpenAI's decision to postpone an IPO. Sam Altman, CEO of the generative AI giant, stated unequivocally that there would be no IPO in 2026. Shares of SoftBank Group, which has made a substantial investment in OpenAI, fell sharply as a result, and the decline was cited as a factor behind the Nikkei's downside.
