The Nikkei Average rebounded for the first time in five sessions, gaining ¥806. Toward the close, a wait-and-see mood spread ahead of the release of major U.S. economic data.
In the afternoon session on the 4th, Japan's stock market ended with the Nikkei Stock Average up ¥806.46 from the previous day at ¥60,520.94, recovering to the ¥60,000 level for the first time in five sessions. The TOPIX extended its advance modestly to 4,103.23 points. The Nikkei reached ¥65,182.45 at 2:52 p.m., but selling as investors waited for a rebound capped gains thereafter ahead of the release of the U.S. August employment report. The yen traded in the low ¥156 range to the dollar.
Information and communications and brokerage stocks, including SoftBank Group, rose, supported by the previous day's gain in Arm shares. Auto-related stocks, meanwhile, remained weak throughout the session as the yen strengthened.
Trading volume on the TSE Prime Market exceeded approximately 2.2 billion shares, while trading value was approximately ¥8.33 trillion, with advancing issues outnumbering declining issues. Advancing sectors included information and communications and brokerage-related stocks, nonferrous metals, air transport, retail and electrical equipment. Mining, marine transportation, and electricity and gas-related stocks were among those that declined.
Among individual stocks, Mフォワード, 鈴木, 宝HLD, メイコー and Wスコープ rose, while JMホールディングス, 住友化学, 洋エンジ, 日鉄鉱 and FIG declined.
