Pan Pacific International Holdings (PPIH) held a press conference in Tokyo to announce its acquisition of the Toys“R”Us Japan business, a major toy retailer. The acquisition is expected to expand the toy category’s sales scale and broaden the PPIH Group’s customer touchpoints.
PPIH, which operates Don Quijote, held a press conference in Tokyo on the 1st regarding its acquisition of the Toys“R”Us Japan business, a major toy retailer. CEO Hideki Moriya said that Toys“R”Us’s reach among infants through families and its 158-store network would contribute to the growth of the PPIH Group. Executive Managing Officer Kenji Moriya noted that the two companies serve different and mutually complementary customer segments, and indicated an aim to increase toy-category sales to approximately ¥150 billion and become the overwhelming market leader.
Mr. Moriya explained that the toy market had continued to grow steadily into a market worth more than ¥1 trillion, and that PPIH’s toy business was also expanding. Demand for character merchandise, products for adults and trading cards is increasing, he said. Toys“R”Us has historically had a store mix skewed toward products for children, but the spread of e-commerce has created a gap with the market, leaving room for future growth, the company indicated.
