ORIX is establishing a structure to support the adoption of next-generation vessels after acquiring mid-sized shipping company 三徳船舶, with Nagasaki-based 大島造船所 using Koyagi Dock.
ORIX acquired the mid-sized shipping company 三徳船舶 in 2024 for approximately ¥300 billion. The acquisition is said to have been aimed at expanding ORIX’s vessel business, with the company seeking to strengthen the shipping business within its group structure. 三徳船舶 is based in Osaka, and ownership by ORIX has progressed.
大島造船所’s Koyagi Dock in Saikai, Nagasaki Prefecture, is reportedly planning to build large bulk carriers on the assumption that it will receive orders from 三徳船舶. The dock is expected to be used as a construction base for bulk carriers and to form part of the development and supply structure for new vessels.
The ordering party is 三徳船舶, which was acquired by ORIX, while ORIX’s vessel business dates back to its founding in 1971. These moves are seen as aimed at promoting the adoption of next-generation vessels in Japan’s shipbuilding and shipping sectors.
