The Nikkei Stock Average fell for a second consecutive session in the Tokyo market on the 29th, ending at ¥65,481.27, down ¥396.35 from the previous day. The index fell sharply at times during trading, but the decline moderated toward the close.
Selling of AI-related and semiconductor-related stocks from the morning was one factor weighing on the Nikkei. In addition, the ex-dividend date for interim dividends at companies with fiscal years ending in March added to the pressure, while liquidation selling also pushed the market lower.
Liquidation selling by investors subsided toward the close, narrowing the decline. Despite the broad market sell-off, intermittent futures buying by short-term traders emerged below the ¥65,000 level, preventing the pace of decline from accelerating toward the close.
